Tuesday, May 30, 2006 || 端午节, dumpling festival, Dragon Boat Festival

粽子 zongzi, meaning dumplings, made using rice to wrap around fillings of own choice.

端午节 is on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar calendar (usually June in the calendar we use now). It is a day to remember the poet Qu Yuan, who was a loyal official in the court of the Chu Kingdom in old China. Other officials told the emperor lies about Qu Yuan. The weak emperor believed the evil officials and asked Qu Yuan to leave his court. Over the next 20 years, the Chu kingdom got weaker. Qu Yuan was very sad that his beloved country was controlled by another country, the Qin Kingdom. He decided to end his life by jumping into the river. Fishermen who heard that Qu Yuan drowned himself in the river set sail on boats to look for his body. When they could not find it, they threw rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river so that the fish in the river would eat the rice instead of his body. The traditions of dragon boat races and eating rice dumplings on Duan Wu Jie thus began. now, we can see many variety of dumplings, ranging from XO favour to yam to even durian...yup, got to enjoy this tasty dumplings!

this is my secure digital card (SD) for my camera. it holds only 128megabytes of memory. this space is considered huge eons ago, when SD card was first invented and shocked the world with its miniature size yet abled capability to store large amount of data. now when you compare this card with the current SD cards, it would be like a world of difference. the prices also dropped from $1 per MB to less than $0.50 per MB. look at how much technology has progress in such a short span of time?

this card has a limted storage space. you can't squeeze in more data beyond its limit. it's data are recorded in binary codes, which most of us do not understand. compared to a human brain in terms of storage capabilities, it would seems like a speck of bacteria in a universe. our memories are filled with emotions, whereas this card is only able to store information. our brain is able to process information, organise it and come out with a suitable conclusion. it is a wonder that evolution has indeed take place.

memories are something that we want to remember, and treasure those moments when we were happy. we look back and recall, we utilise it during exams, we depends on it to make decisions. my memories, i will always treasure it.

Excuses for a study break!

Going for a walk in the park - need to get in touch with my hippie side
Need to focus on perfecting duo-directional pen spinning on the other hand.

Sunday, May 28, 2006 || rainy days

hmm...rainy days...sometimes, i wish that the rain will not come, when i have outdoor activities, or on my way to school. but there are more times when i wish for the arrival of the rain...rain brings about life to nature, nourish and rejuvenate the environment that we live in...it provides the chance for a refreshment, where i can enjoy the cooling effects of rain..upon the end of a rain, we will see a completely new sparkling world, where the nature comes out to explore the soothing world...and if luck is present, we may even spot a beautiful rainbow of hope...water cycle is so important to our life.

rain rain come along, come always to my world.

took this photo while travelling on the bus...and it was raining heavily...so just got the urge to capture the moment at that time...was quite tough due to the uneven bus ride, thus tried many shots to get this...

the kite runner

the author manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil, Afghanistan, while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. this is a story about a boy name Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. Since small, both children had grown up as playing partners,but Amir sometimes faces the problem of whether it is appropriate to accpet Hassan, a servant, as a real friend. Until the day when Amir betrays Hassan, whose loyalty to Amir never waiver, did Amir discover that the story of brotherhood is indeed thicker than any obstabcles. Amir went to Amerrica when the country was in turmoil, and Hassan, upon leaving the family, married and had a child. However, Hassan passed away not long later, leaving his child, Sohrab. Spurred on by childhood guilt, Amir makes the difficult journey to Kabul,to adopt the child.

i like this book very much. it provides a perceptive examination of recent Afghan history and its ramifications in both America and the Middle East, and the result is a complete work of literature that succeeds in exploring the culture of a previously obscure nation that has become a pivot point in the global politics of the new millennium. movie will be coming out in year 2007. will be looking forward to it, and the author's new upcoming book.

one value that i can learn from this book is : To err is human, and forgiveness is hard to come by.

Friday, May 26, 2006 || sunflower

(Helianthus annuus L.)
Sunflowers get their name because they always face the sun -- turning their flowers to track the sun's movement across the sky -- a phenomenon known as heliotropism. Sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. It symbolises glory, sunshine of my life and adoration.

I took this photo at the annual flower festival held in Sentosa this year. One of the beautiful flowers exhibited there. yup, a sunshine flower that brings happiness and cheers too.

Thursday, May 25, 2006 || Q&A

a book which recounts the hardship faced by a boy living in india, sexual abuse, racism, poverty, homeless and more. Ram Mohammad Thomas is the boy, who was accused of defrauding the popular TV game show "Who Wants to Be A Billionaire?", and tortured in the corrupted jail, until a mysterious lawyer intervenes and takes him away. from there on, he tells the lawyer the details of the game show, on how he managed to win the game show eventually, which of course is through intelligence and wit, not by cheating. the author is able to tell various encounters by Ram through the use of individual questions in the show, one will have to willing to go along with the premise that this entire structure is based on coincidence of colossal proportions . what i really admire most is that despite this bleak subjects of the harsh environment the boy grew up in, the intrepid Ram keeps doggedly moving forward and surviving. as long as one continue to believe what you believe in, and dare to stand up for it, the truth will eventually prevails. those who keep their eyes and ears open in life can learn a lot about it without any books, as in the case of this boy, who constantly observe his surroundings, gaining information which eventually aids in his success in the quiz show. An excellent story, well-told, an utterly enjoyable picaresque adventure.

maiden post

this shall be my first maiden blog, which i will not focus on the details of my everyday lives, but more of my thoughts potrayed through the photos that i have taken since i had the wonderful camera. some things about my camera: it's not very popular, as it cannot be found in major electrical stores, yet i really like its functions and navigation. the settings can be adjusted manually, thus enabling me to have a better control over the pictures i will be taking. yup, a 5megapixel camera too. well, that's all for the introduction to the camera. i believe photos will be able to potray what i have in mind, and will show a more clearer picture of my thoughts.
